Phisterer was born in Germany, emigrated to the U.S. and joined the Army in 1855. He was with the 3rd Artillery at Fort Yuma, Cal. and was promoted to sergeant by 1860 when he was discharged. He reenlisted in 1861 into the 18th U.S. Infantry as a sergeant-major. He saw field action in 1862 in eastern Kentucky with Thomas, marched to Pittsburg Landing, Tenn. and fought in Tennessee campaigns (1863).
